3 workers injured in shooting at Los Angeles senior living facility, fellow employee in custody: Police
One of the victims was critically injured, police said.
Three people were injured in a shooting at a senior living facility in Los Angeles on Monday, when a staff member allegedly opened fire on his co-workers, police said.
The suspect was located inside the residence and taken into custody, the Los Angeles Police Department said.
The shooting occurred shortly before 11 a.m. PT. in the lobby of the Progressive Home for the Elderly in South Los Angeles, according to LAPD Deputy Chief Marc Reina.
The three victims were transported to a local hospital with gunshot wounds. One person was in critical condition while the other two were stable, Reina said during a press briefing Monday afternoon. The victims, who were all staff members of the facility, included a man in his 60s and two women in their 40s and 70s, police said.
The suspect, another employee at the home, was located on another floor during a search of the six-floor building, according to Reina. Police were working to determine his position at the residence.
The suspect, described as a man in his 60s, had not yet been booked, so no additional details were being released at this time, Reina said.
No residents of the facility, which is home to more than 100 people, were injured, officials said.
The shooting remains under investigation.
Marqueece Harris-Dawson, president of the Los Angeles City Council, thanked first responders for their swift response to the shooting to render aid and take the suspect into custody.
"Their action we absolutely believe prevented further injury or loss of life of this very, very precious population that we have here in our community," Harris-Dawson said during the press briefing. "We'll continue to work with them to investigate to make sure we keep guns out of places like senior housing facilities."
