Latest tsunami forecasts, warnings for Hawaii and resources on Japan's quake.
March 11, 2011— -- A magnitude 8.9 earthquake rocked Japan, triggering a 13-foot tsunami that swept buildings off their foundations and washed away homes along the northeastern coast Friday.
Dozens of cities and villages along a 1,300-mile stretch of coastline were shaken by violent tremors. Airports were shut down, the Tokyo subway was closed and 4 million people lack power.
A tsunami warning was issued this morning across 20 countries, including the United States -- Hawaii and the entire U.S. West Coast. In Hawaii, the warning was downgraded to an advisory, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
President Obama warned Americans in tsunami prone areas to heed all warnings, and said FEMA is monitoring the situation and coordinating with state and local officials.
