May 12, 2010— -- New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg visited London yesterday to witness firsthand the so-called "ring of steel" that blankets the center of the city, one million security cameras covering virtually every block.

The complex security measures are intended to stop terrorism before disaster strikes, with technology that can follow suspects and identify threats like abandoned bags in public places.

"This is what it's all about, being able to deter, prevent and, if God forbid, something happens, apprehend whoever caused it," Bloomberg said.

The vast network of electronic eyes also tracks the innocent -- capturing the average Londoner on camera an estimated 300 times a day.

Bloomberg's visit raises the possibility that similar camera systems could come to New York or other American cities. Already, plans are in place to blanket parts of Manhattan with thousands of cameras.

Our question to you today: Would you welcome more government-run security cameras in U.S. cities, or is it a Big Brother step that goes too far?
