Judge Slaps Bobby Brown With 8-Day Sentence
Jan. 17 -- Singer Bobby Brown began serving an eight-day jail sentence after surrendering today in DeKalb County, Ga., to satisfy an arrest warrant.
State Court Judge Wayne M. Purdom issued the bench warrant, ruling that the embattled entertainer violated his bond when he performed earlier this week on the American Music Awards.
Brown, the 33-year-old husband of pop diva Whitney Houston, also allegedly missed his weekly appointment to report to a court bailiff hours before Monday night's awards show.
Brown was arrested in April 1996 by an officer who said his red Mercedes-Benz was driving erratically. The singer was charged with drunken driving, speeding, no proof of insurance and failure to maintain a lane.
Brown failed to show up for a 1997 court date to answer those charges. DeKalb officials revived the case when the entertainer was arrested in Atlanta last Nov. 7 and charged with speeding, no proof of insurance, driving without a license and possession of an ounce or less of marijuana.
For violating the terms of the bond, Brown was ordered by the judge to immediately begin serving an eight-day jail sentence. He must also complete 240 hours of community service and pay a $200,000 fine.
