Sad Winslet Talks Split
September 5 -- Facing the media Tuesday, Kate Winslet said she is "extremely sad" about the breakup of her nearly three-year marriage to film director Jim Threapleton.
The Titanic star told reporters that the separation was amicable and a mutual decision.
"Jim and I have great respect for each other," she said. "There is no malice at all. It is extremely sad, but we are all fine," she told the gathered press as she emerged from the north London flat where she is currently staying. Speaking of their daughter, she said, "Mia remains the happy child that she always has been. That is all, and we would be grateful now if you would respect our privacy." No reason has been given for the breakup of the couple, who were perceived by many as the picture of domestic bliss. A statement issued on Monday from Winslet's spokesman sought to eliminate at least one possible reason, saying "no other parties are involved" in the separation.
In an interview in the September issue of InStyle magazine, Winslet spoke affectionately about her husband, but hinted that her personal life was not all plain sailing. "Having a baby has strengthened the relationship, although there are highs and lows and at times it's tough. I know we're very lucky," she said. At the time of her 1998 marriage to Threapleton, Winslet said "When you know [you are in love], you know — that's what I've been told all my life and now I know."
