Sound Bites: Madonna, Lennox Lewis, Johnny Cash
April 26 -- Madonna and Her Underwear in Demand
Madonna-fever runs as high as ever in Great Britain — not only did crowds camp overnight for a chance to get tickets to her London show, which sold out in minutes, but a collector shelled out top dollar for a piece of intimate memorabilia. At a Christie's auction today in London, a conical, black satin bra — designed by Jean Paul Gaultier and worn by the singer on her 1990 Blonde Ambition tour — was sold for $20,000. Meanwhile, 16,000 tickets to her July 4 show at London's Earl's Court were snapped up in 15 minutes this morning by devoted fans. In the wake of the sellout, the Material Girl, who is promoting last fall's Music, announced additional dates at Earl's Court, July 5, 7, 9, 10, and 12.
Lennox Lewis Knocked Out of Singing CareerFormer heavyweight boxing champ Lennox Lewis, who unexpectedly lost his title when he was knocked out last weekend in South Africa, has also received a blow to his music career. Lewis had recorded a rap single, "The Man," with All Saints producer K Gee, according to British tabloid The Sun — but the single had to be scrapped before its release. In the song, Lewis raps, "I am the heavyweight champion of the world. I am going to knock the motherfuckers out like that." The single was due to be released in several weeks, but a source told the paper, "It would be really stupid to release the song now, as what he says on it was rubbish."
Man in Black Protests Urban Outfit
Country legend Johnny Cash and his longtime photographer, Jim Marshall, filed a lawsuit Monday against the Urban Outfitters retail chain for using the singer's name and likeness on a T-shirt sold at the company's stores. The suit, filed in San Francisco, says that Urban Outfitters used a photo of Cash at San Quentin prison in 1969, and reproduced it on the shirts without consent. Cash's all-black clothing may seem like an "urban outfit" — but his heart, clearly, is in the country.
