April 18 -- A veteran stuntman on the Fox comedy Titus suffered head injuries and multiple fractures after his race car crashed into a pyrotechnics-rigged ramp.

Stunt driver Brian Carson, 44, is in serious condition at a Los Angeles area hospital, according to a nursing supervisor. Carson was working on a stunt for the show at the Los Angeles County raceway Tuesday when his car hit a ramp at approximately 60 mph, fire officials said.

The structure was rigged with explosives, but the timing of the stunt was off, according to Los Angeles County Fire Capt. Brian Jordan. Carson's vehicle exploded and spun around the track, and he was knocked unconscious.

"He was in very serious, critical condition, but he's improved and he's responding to his wife," Dr. Jay Brown told City News Service. "He's a professional stunt driver. He's wearing a lot of equipment, he's in a car that's well-prepared, and so, for the type of accident I understand that he had, he's doing very well."

"Brian, when you wake up, [you'll see that] it was amazing," said series star Christopher Titus.

Titus is ranked No. 49 in this week's Nielsen ratings.
