March 30 -- After winning Grammys for his production skills and his rhyming, Dr. Dre is on top of the hip-hop music world and now he's taking another crack at the movies.

The Los Angeles rapper just wrapped the shooting for Training Day, a Warner Bros. Pictures film directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Dre (born Andre Young) plays an assistant to veteran cop Washington, who is training rookie cop Hawke on his first day on the narcotics team. Snoop Dogg and Macy Gray both have cameo roles in the picture. At one time, Eminem was also pursued to play the role of the villain in the film, but no deal was reached.

Aside from music documentaries, Dre has seen previous screen time in Set It Off, a 1996 movie directed by F. Gary Gray about four women on a crime spree.

Dre is teaming with Gray again, though this time not as an actor the rap producer is working on the soundtrack to Gray's Diablo, which also recently finished shooting.

Training Day is due for release in September, and Diablo has not yet set a date.
