December 15 -- Kid Rock, the self-proclaimed "American Bad Ass," is returning to the limelight in a new role, that of gentleman, paying his respects to soldiers who died in service.

Rock announced this morning that he will donate the proceeds from his Jan. 21 concert in Norfolk, Va., to the Navy Marine Corp Relief Society, in order to aid the families of those crewmembers killed in the recent bombing attack on the USS Cole.

Tickets for the show, which includes openers Buckcherry and Fuel, will be available at half price to military personnel and their families. While in Norfolk, a Navy port, Rock hopes to meet with officers and sailors from the Cole, who played his song "American Bad Ass" when leaving the port in Yemen where they were attacked.

On top of honoring servicemen, Rock will also honor the people who started the music he names himself after the rock and roll pioneers at Sun Records.

Earlier this week, MTV revealed Rock's plans to join Sheryl Crow, Eric Clapton, and Mark Knopfler on a tribute record to seminal rock label Sun Records, which celebrates its 50th anniversary next year. Rock recorded the rockabilly song "Drinkin' Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee," previously performed by early rockers Jerry Lee Lewis and the Johnny Burnette Trio.

Sun Records was formed in Memphis in 1951 by Sam Phillips and pioneered rock and roll, with a roster that included Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbisson, and Johnny Cash.

After emerging as a star in 1999 with the release of Devil Without a Cause, Rock has survived a more sobering year in 2000, dealing with a drawn-out custody battle for his 7-year-old son, as well as a lawsuit from a former manager. Last month, he was dealt another blow, with the death of his friend and sidekick Joe C.

This fall Rock worked on a new record, which does not yet have a title.
