Film Fest Lauds Nic Cage
December 14 -- Oscar-winning actor Nicolas Cage will have to make room for another award on his mantel. The star will be honored with the Charles A. Crain Desert Palm Award on Jan. 13 at the Palm Springs International Film Festival in Palm Springs, Calif.
Cage will follow in the footsteps of fellow actors John Travolta, Sophia Loren, and Susan Sarandon, who've also received the trophy.
"We are excited with having the opportunity to honor someone with such greatness," festival spokesman Denis Pregnolato told The Associated Press. "Nicolas Cage is a relatively young actor, but the body of work he has been able to produce has just been fantastic."
Cage, 36, is indeed relatively young, but as he has aged, his body of work has moved from more challenging fare (he won a Best Actor Oscar for 1995's Leaving Las Vegas) to action-heavy blockbusters like this year's Gone in 60 Seconds.
There are, however, signs that Cage may be moving back to the dark, edgy pictures that gave him his start. The actor's next projects include John Woo's World War II epic, Windtalkers, and the next quirky film from Being John Malkovich's creators, Adaptation.
The Palm Springs film fest runs from Jan. 11 to Jan. 22.
