Rage Bassist Goes Free

September 11 -- Rage Against the Machine bassist Tim Commerford was walking the streets again Friday, following his arrest Thursday for suspicion of assault and resisting arrest after disrupting the MTV Video Music Awards.

As Fred Durst accepted Limp Bizkit's Best Rock Video Award, a 15-foot-tall structure behind the podium began shaking; all eyes quickly went to the top, upon which Commerford was sitting and grinning maniacally. "Stage dive, dude," advised Durst, as security quickly arrived, and the telecast cut away.

Off-camera, ladders were brought out, and Commerford came down after about 10 minutes, only to wind up in a scuffle with security. Plainclothes officers led Commerford out of Radio City Music Hall, where he was forced up against a limousine, handcuffed, and led away by police.

Friday morning in a midtown Manhattan, N.Y., court, Commerford pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct and was released on time served, having spent the previous night in jail. He was reportedly not fined in connection with the incident.

Rage Against the Machine bodyguard Perrin "Big Pete" Bentle, who was also arrested Thursday after attempting to protect Commerford from authorities, also pleaded guilty, to a charge of obstruction of justice, and was released on time served.
