August 14 -- Madonna was rushed to a Los Angeles hospital Friday with abdominal pain and bleeding, and doctors performed emergency surgery to save her unborn baby boy, the BBC reports.

The pop singer's son, Rocco Ritchie, was born later Friday three weeks before his due date. According to a BBC article, Madonna had a detached placenta, which was cutting off the baby's oxygen supply. Doctors at Cedars Sinai Hospital performed an emergency Caesarean section in order to save the baby's life.

Rocco weighed 5 pounds, 9 ounces.

Little Rocco is Madonna's first child with English director-beau Guy Ritchie, 32. She has a daughter, 3-year-old Lourdes, from a relationship with her former fitness trainer, Carlos Leon. The couple split up shortly after Lourdes' birth.

The Material Girl's publicist would not confirm whether Madonna was still hospitalized, only stating, "Madonna is overjoyed. She is safe, as is little Rocco. Guy and Lourdes are by her side."

Indeed, Ritchie apparently stayed at Madonna's bedside during the traumatic and frightening time. One hospital source told the BBC, "Madonna lost a lost of blood. For any mother, just seeing that amount of blood is terrifying."

Hopefully the new mom will be feeling better soon. Her next delivery will be a long-awaited new album, Music, due out Sept. 19.
