Jan. 23, 2006 — -- With its harsh temperatures, winter can be murderous on hair. Stylist to the stars Jonathan Antin (www.jonathanproduct.com) has cures for some of the most terrifying hair issues: static, frizzy ends and, of course, hat head.

In 2004, Antin, who has worked with everyone from Madonna to Tiger Woods, starred in the reality series "Blow Out," which chronicled the opening of Jonathan Salon in Beverly Hills, Calif. The second season chronicled Antin's work in his two salons, as well as his latest venture: the launch of a signature hair-care product line.

Antin is currently shooting the third season, which will appear on Bravo. He said his goal was to make beautiful and stylish hair simple to achieve. It can be done, he said, even in the winter.

Below are Antin's tips for winter hair issues:

Problem 1: Static and Flyaway Hair

Static electricity causes hair to go in unfortunate directions. But Antin said by washing your hair with the right moisturizing shampoo and conditioner -- especially sulfate-free products -- you could tame flyaway locks. Before blow-drying, Antin recommends combining thickening foam and either straightening serum or curling serum -- depending on how you want to style your hair. The thickening foam adds direction while the serum shapes the hair shaft. After blow-drying, Antin suggests applying one more layer with a shine serum or texturizing paste.

Problem 2: Dry, Frizzy Ends

Dry, frizzy ends are a result of a lack of moisture. People with chemically overtreated hair often have this problem because the hair is far too porous and won't hold in the moisture. Antin recommends a haircut if your ends are dry and damaged. If that is not an option, never use shampoo with sodium laurel sulfates -- the chemicals will strip the hair and scalp of even more moisture. Antin says people with this problem should wash -- but not every day -- with a moisturizing shampoo and follow up with a leave-in conditioner. On days that they skip the shampoo, Antin suggests a freshen-up mist to clean and refresh the hair's smell.

Problem 3: Hat Head

When someone has hat head, he or she needs a quick fix that boosts the flat and deflated hair. Antin says you should look for products that have style memory so that hair will go right back into place with a mere tousle. Antin suggests applying a texturizing paste or reapplying a freshening spray to restyle and shape hair.
