While speaking to "GMA" last month, Kaling shared how "Not Suitable for Work" pulls from her own life experiences, similar to her previous projects "Never Have I Ever" and "The Sex Lives of College Girls."

Kaling said "Never Have I Ever," which spanned four seasons from 2020 to 2023, was about her high school experience, while "The Sex Lives of College Girls," which premiered in 2021 and ended in 2025 after three seasons, was about her time at Dartmouth College.

"Not Suitable for Work," Kaling said, is about the "last pivotal time in my youth, which was moving to New York City, being super ambitious, and being in our 20s."

What did the cast say about working on the new show?

The cast of "Not Suitable for Work" also joined Kaling on "GMA" on May 27 and spoke about what it was like bringing the show to life in New York City.

"I feel so lucky to shoot in New York City, because it's kind of like a built-in character in itself," Duvernay said. "You're out there, you're amongst the New Yorkers, some are nicer than others."

He added, "One thing about New York is that they'll tell you when you're in the way."

When they weren't filming, Avantika said that the cast "trauma"-bonded over escape rooms.

"We have Jack Martin to thank for that," she said, joking that Martin, who she said "really loves escape rooms," had subjected her and the rest of the cast to "arguably the worst, most horrifying experience of my life."

"Everyone's laughing [now] ... but when we were getting dragged out from a metal bed by our legs, it was not so funny," she continued, adding, "I'm glad I walked out of it alive."
