Actress Sophie Turner is set to play Lara Croft in a new "Tomb Raider" series.

Amazon MGM Studios confirmed the casting news in an Instagram post Wednesday. The Tomb Raider video game franchise shared the news on its page as well.

"I am thrilled beyond measure to be playing Lara Croft," Turner said in a statement. "She's such an iconic character, who means so much to so many -- and I am giving everything I've got."

Phoebe Waller-Bridge will write and executive produce the new "Tomb Raider" series, which was announced last May at Amazon MGM Studios' upfronts presentation.

"They're massive shoes to fill, following in the steps of Angelina and Alicia with their powerhouse performances, but with Phoebe at the helm, we (and Lara) are all in very safe hands," Turner continued in her statement. "I can't wait for you all to see what we have cooking."

Waller-Bridge added in her own statement, "It's not very often you get to make a show of this scale with a character you grew up loving. Everyone on board is wildly passionate about Lara and are all as outrageous, brave, and hilarious as she is. Get your artifacts out... Croft is coming...."

The new "Tomb Raider" series is based on the action and adventure video game franchise of the same name from game developer Core Design. The first game in the franchise was released in 1996, with multiple sequel installments and spinoffs in the years since.

The game centers around fictional British archaeologist Lara Croft, who travels the world in search of ancient artifacts, encountering dangerous situations and hostile enemies in the process.
