Lindsay Clancy trial: Jury says it is deadlocked for 2nd time, unable to reach verdict

Judge William Sullivan reminded the audience Wednesday morning about the standing orders and laws meant to prevent jurors from being harassed.

"Everybody should be well aware of that order and that statute," Sullivan said. 

His reminder followed the arrest of a woman who allegedly attempted to photograph the jury on Tuesday.

Then, one by one, the judge summoned each juror to the bench, swore him or her in and asked each a question. This was done with attorneys present but out of public earshot.

The woman arrested, Dawn Light, was taken into custody on Tuesday around 3:40 p.m. ET and charged with one count of intimidation of a witness, jurors, or person furnishing information in connection with criminal proceedings, a Massachusetts State Police spokesperson told ABC Boston affiliate WCVB-TV. 

Light is being arraigned this morning in a different courtroom.

Jurors in the murder trial of Lindsay Clancy returned to a third floor courtroom at Plymouth County Superior Court on Wednesday for a fifth day of deliberations.

They previously told the judge they were unable to reach a unanimous verdict, and Judge William Sullivan instructed them to keep trying.

Jurors will continue to deliberate in the murder trial of Lindsay Clancy on Wednesday after announcing earlier in the day on Tuesday that they could not come up with a unanimous verdict, after hours of deliberation.

The jury was sent home Tuesday afternoon after failing to reach a verdict once more.

According to ABC News legal contributor Channa Lloyd, should the group of 12 remain deadlocked, the next steps are up to the judge's discretion.

"What the judge is going to consider is the amount of evidence, how long the trial was, the amount of information they're processing and how long they've been deliberating," Lloyd said Tuesday on ABC News Live.

"Typically, this judge is going to send them back the first time," she continued. "There are plenty of times a jury say that they can't reach a conclusion, but oftentimes, judges are going to softly encourage them, the initial time, to continue deliberations."

Lloyd added that it would be noteworthy to see how fast the jury returns if they remain deadlocked.

"That will be a very telling sign," she said.

If the jury continues to fail to reach a verdict, the judge may read another instruction to the jury, specifically encouraging them to arrive at the verdict.

If a verdict continues to evade the jury, the judge may eventually declare a hung jury and a mistrial. The case may then be retried.

The jury is going home for the day after about 22 hours of total deliberations.

The jury sent no notes after the one they sent earlier Tuesday -- in which they stated they could not reach a verdict -- indicating an impasse.

The judge instructed the jury to continue deliberations on Wednesday.
