What to know about choosing sunscreen for kids

Choosing the right sunscreen doesn't have to be complicated.

When it comes to protecting kids from the sun, the options can feel endless. But experts say choosing the right sunscreen doesn't have to be complicated. The key is consistency, coverage and finding something your child will actually wear.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, parents should look for a "broad-spectrum" sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays, with an SPF of at least 15 to 30 (though many families opt for SPF 30+ for extra reassurance).

For sensitive skin, mineral-based formulas with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are often recommended, especially for areas like the nose, ears, and shoulders.

And while the sunscreen aisle may suggest otherwise, price doesn't equal protection.

"Deciding on a sunscreen shouldn't be stressful or financially straining. More expensive doesn't mean it's better," Jade A. Cobern, a medical fellow at ABC News who is board-certified in pediatrics and preventive medicine, told "Good Morning America."

"Stay in your budget. Focus on getting an SPF 30 or higher, applying it appropriately on the skin, and remembering to re-apply it frequently, about every two hours or immediately after swimming, sweating or drying off with a towel," she said.

What matters most: How you use it

No matter which formula you choose, proper use is what really protects your child's skin.

Experts, including the AAP, recommend:

  • Applying sunscreen 15-30 minutes before sun exposure
  • Using enough to fully cover exposed skin
  • Reapplying every two hours (or sooner if swimming or sweating)
  • Avoiding ingredients like oxybenzone if possible, especially for frequent use

"Sunscreen is an essential part of preventing skin cancer," Cobern added. "Research shows that the risk increases with strong sun exposure, and the earlier sunburns start in life, the higher that cumulative risk is over time."

You don't need the trendiest bottle or the most expensive brand to keep your kids safe. A broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen, applied generously and often, goes a long way. Add in a little education and consistency, and you're not just protecting your child today, you're helping them build healthy habits that last a lifetime.

Mineral sunscreens for kids

Mineral sunscreens sit on top of the skin and physically block UV rays, making them a go-to for babies and kids with sensitive skin.

What to look for:

  • Zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as active ingredients
  • Fragrance-free formulas
  • Easy-to-apply sticks for faces

These formulas can leave a slight white cast, but that visibility can actually help parents ensure full coverage (and many kids love the "face paint" aspect).

Sunscreens for active kids

If your kids are constantly in motion -- think camp, sports, or beach days -- a water-resistant sunscreen is essential.

What to look for:

  • Water resistance (40-80 minutes)
  • Sweat-resistant formulas
  • Sprays or lotions that spread quickly

Just remember: Sprays still need to be rubbed in to ensure even coverage, and reapplication is non-negotiable after water play.

Easy application sunscreen

The best sunscreen is the one your child won't fight. As kids get older, giving them ownership can make a big difference.

What to look for:

  • Stick or roll-on applicators
  • Travel-friendly sizes for backpacks
  • Non-greasy textures

"Parents should also discuss sun safety with their kids as they age, so they know why it's important and how to apply and reapply it correctly," Cobern said. "This helps build lifelong habits centered on sun safety and skin health."
