Miles McBride shares back-to-school must-haves, message behind his children's book
For New York Knicks guard and 2026 NBA champion Miles "Deuce" McBride, heading back to school is about more than picking out a fresh pair of sneakers. It's also an opportunity for kids to build confidence, make new friends and try something new.
McBride recently teamed up with Zappos for the back-to-school season, sharing some of his own school-year must-haves while also spotlighting the message behind his children's book, "The Champion of Friendship."
McBride told "Good Morning America" the book combines two things that have always been important to him, reading and inspiring kids.
"I always loved to write, always loved to read," McBride said. "And I always wanted to inspire the youth."
Basketball also plays an important role in the book's message. McBride said the sport has taught him lessons that go far beyond what happens on the court, especially when it comes to building friendships.
"Basketball can be a great sport, can teach you so many great life lessons," he said.

Those lessons took on even more meaning for McBride during the Knicks' championship run earlier this year.
"You're never out, you're never down," he said, adding that being able to persevere through comeback wins alongside his teammates made the championship experience even more meaningful.
McBride also credited the relationships among his teammates as an important part of their success.
"We have such great leaders, and I think the main thing about being a leader is being a listener," he said.
That friendship and accountability, he said, started well before the season, with teammates checking in on one another throughout the summer.
"I think that's what good friends do," McBride said. "You make sure you hold each other accountable."
McBride's advice for kids heading back to school
As students trade summer schedules for classrooms, McBride said he hopes kids see the new school year as a fresh opportunity.
"Going to school gives you a fresh start and gives you an opportunity to meet friends, try new things and grow," he said.
For kids heading to a new school, struggling to make friends, or feeling nervous about putting themselves out there, McBride encourages them to stay positive.
"You might not be good at first, but if you keep trying, you keep your head up and stay positive, anything can happen," he said.
While friendship and confidence may be among McBride's most important back-to-school messages, he knows there are a few things kids need to feel ready for the year ahead, too.
His No. 1 back-to-school pick? A new pair of sneakers.
"Fresh pair of shoes to get out on the playground and have some fun," McBride said. "I need a fresh pair of shoes and some jeans that are ready to get dirty."
