Dogster Helps Canine-Lovers Meet Online
March 22 -- The Internet is going to the dogs.
There's a new Web community called Dogster, where dog lovers from around the world are getting together in huge numbers. The name is a nod to the popular human networking site called Friendster.
Dogster features photos of dogs from around the world, from the exotic chow chow to the good old golden retriever.
There are pooch profiles, featured dogs of the week and news stories about dogs. It even has a canine advice column called, "I Like it Ruff."
The latest entry was from a Manhattanite who wanted a pooch, but was worried about space.
"I desperately want a dog," the advice seeker wrote. "Unfortunately, I live in two-bedroom studio apartment in Manhattan. Could you give me some advice on selecting a breed, or tips on keeping a dog in Manhattan? J."
Dogster was founded by Ted Rheingold, a 33-year-old dot-com survivor who created and maintains the site as a hobby.
The site went live on January 12 with just 100 dogs. Last week, the site broke 10,000, and as many as 1,000 new dogs from all over the world, including some from countries like Afghanistan, New Zealand and Croatia, are added daily.
The most-posted breed is the Labrador retriever, followed by Chihuahuas, American pit bull terriers, German shepherd and golden retrievers.
