"Good Morning America" kicked off Breast Cancer Awareness Month Thursday by hosting its first-ever walk for breast cancer.

ABC News chief meteorologist led the walk in Queens, New York, during the broadcast, joined by WABC meteorologist Dani Wickstrom and dozens of other women and men walking to make a difference in the fight against breast cancer.

Since the start of Breast Cancer Awareness initiatives in 1985, over 517,000 lives have been saved from better treatment and proactive screening, according to the American Cancer Society.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month -- which occurs annually in October - is now a global movement, marked by pink ribbons, walks and a push for advances in research and early detection.

Throughout the month of October, the American Cancer Society hosts nearly 150 walks across the United States.

The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks include everyone from individuals to companies and teams rallying to support those impacted by breast cancer.

Boston will host its Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk this weekend, followed by walks in cities from New York and Los Angeles to Orlando, Chicago, Phoenix, Atlanta and countless cities in between.
