Do Christmas Shopping Now for Best Deals
Aug. 16, 2005 — -- Christmas is 131 days away, but it's not too early to start thinking about holiday shopping. Early holiday shoppers save money by avoiding impulse buying and expensive express shipping for last minute purchases. Best of all, if you get your shopping done now, you can relax and enjoy the holidays.
"Good Morning America's" Savings Mom Stephanie Nelson gives the scoop on how to get some terrific bargains.
Williams-Sonoma Placemats, Napkins and Tablecloths
Most merchandisers are clearing out their spring and summer items now for more than 50 percent off. A lot of home decor items marketed for spring or summer will match someone's color scheme all year long. If the items really shout "spring," don't worry because by the time you give them spring will be just around the corner.
Also, check outlet Web sites like Overstock.com. They only charge $1 for shipping!
L.L. Bean Polar Fleece Vest
Who would buy a winter vest in August? Anyone who wants to save a lot of money by buying last year's item at a closeout price. By the time you're giving this vest as a gift, it will be winter. At this time of year, some retailers sell their winter items only on their Web sites.
J&R DVD Recorder
This DVD player originally cost almost $600, but the Savings Mom found it for just under $200. How did she do it? Because it's last year's model, and retailers have to get rid of perfectly good current inventory to make room for their holiday inventory, which consists of this year's models. So, if you don't mind last year's model, you can really save on clearance sales.
Toys 'R Us Electronic Drum Set
Toys 'R Us is running a green tag sale which gives you 50 percent off sale items. The Savings Mom bought a drum set that for $24.99 was originally $49.99.
