6 dead after explosion collapses building in Athens

Six bodies were recovered Saturday after an explosion collapsed a two-story building in Athens, Greece, local fire officials told ABC News.

The blast took place Friday morning in Plaka, a popular tourist neighborhood near the ancient Acropolis, and sent debris throughout the block.

The exact cause of the explosion is under investigation.

Mayor Haris Doukas told reporters that later Friday that six people were reported missing and that a search and rescue operation was "being conducted with great care."

Two people in an adjacent building were injured, according to the mayor and fire officials.

On Saturday, a spokesperson for the Hellenic Fire Department told ABC News that the six missing persons' bodies were recovered.
