Iran live updates: Kuwait reports Iranian missile, drone attacks

President Donald Trump said the renewed military campaign in Iran would last "not too long" but did not offer a concrete timeline.

"As soon as it's over, which I don't think will be very much longer. I don't know how much more they can take, but you know whatever, it is, doesn't matter," he said.

Trump made a point to emphasize that his decisions regarding Iran are not influenced by the looming midterm elections, with the president pointing out that he is not on the ballot.

Pressed on "what’s left to strike" in Iran, Trump pivoted to tout the fact that the U.S. is "controlling" the Strait of Hormuz and suggested the strikes on Iran are in response to their aggression against vessels moving through the waterway.

"We've controlled and we are controlling the Hormuz Strait. We are bringing lots of boats out every day with millions of barrels of oil. We are, for the most part, doing it without trouble. Every once in a while, they shoot a drone and knock it down, but we have control," Trump said.

Trump then repeated that the U.S. targeted Iran’s radar systems, which he said Iran was about to finish rebuilding -- despite his repeated claims that Iran’s military systems have been defeated.

"They were trying to rebuild their radar systems and a missile system and a mine drop. We got rid of all the mines in the Hormuz Strait. They were trying to build a rocket that drops mines. Who does that?" Trump said. "It was almost finished, so we took it out. We saw that they were building. We see everything that they're doing. They can't move -- They can't go to the bathroom without us seeing it."

Secretary of State Marco Rubio was asked about the latest U.S. strikes on Iran and the prospects of returning to the memorandum of understanding reached in June—something mediating nations have been attempting to encourage but the Trump administration has repeatedly rebuffed.

"Well look, that ship, in many ways, has sailed," Rubio said of the scrapped agreement, during a phone interview with Fox News.

"At the core issue here is that they’re never going to have a nuclear weapon," he continued. "As long as they continue to endeavor, or claim to want one, they’re going to pay a price for it. And that price is going to be primarily economic, but we reserve the right as we said, to take military action when necessary, not just to protect ourselves but to prevent them from being able to threaten others as well."

President Donald Trump proposed renaming the Strait of Hormuz to "TRUMP STRAIT" on Wednesday.

"Now that we have it under U.S.A. control, should we change the name Hormuz Strait to TRUMP STRAIT??? Like America itself, it would be “hotter” than ever before!" Trump said in a post on social media.

Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said a U.S. strike in Kuhestak Tuesday evening hit a wedding ceremony, describing it as a war crime.

"These barbaric war crimes, which constitute a gross violation of the fundamental principles of international law," the ministry said in a statement.

The Iranian Red Crescent said at least four people were killed and 67 others were injured in the alleged attack.

U.S. Central Command spokesperson Capt. Tim Hawkins said Wednesday the U.S. is now looking into the reports.

"We’re aware of the reports, which originated from Iranian state media and we are looking into them. The U.S. military never targets civilians, unlike the IRGC," Hawkins said. 

Earlier Tuesday evening, Hawkins had said CENTCOM is aware of the reports, but had not said it is looking into it.
