Iran live updates: Trump says he'll declare Strait of Hormuz a US territory

The United Arab Emirates is condemning the latest attack on a vessel crossing the Strait of Hormuz, UAE's Foreign Ministry said Saturday.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs called it a "hostile Iranian attack" targeting a ship associated with the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC). The Emirates News Agency said the company confirmed the incident occurred on Friday evening and no injuries were reported.

This comes after two ADNOC ships were targeted on Thursday.

At least nine people are dead and 11 others injured in Israeli strikes on two towns in southern Lebanon, the Lebanese Ministry of Health said Saturday.

Seven were killed and two others wounded in a strike in the town of Ansar, the ministry said. Three children and 2 women were among the dead according to authorities.

Another Israeli strike left two dead and nine injured in the town in Der al-Zahrani, the health ministry said.

In a statement, the Israel Defense Force said the strikes on "terror infrastructure" were in response to action against its soldiers by Hezbollah.

"The IDF will not allow the Hezbollah terrorist organization to harm Israeli civilians and IDF soldiers, and will continue to operate to remove threats," the IDF statement said.

Lebanon Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said the escalation "undermines efforts to stabilize the situation in the south."

"The seven martyrs of the Israeli airstrike on the town of Ansar are not 'military infrastructure,' nor are the children and women killed in it military targets," Salam said.

Israel and Lebanon have been in talks since signing a "framework agreement" in June.

Despite the truce, the Israeli military has continued to strike Hezbollah targets and remains present in southern Lebanon.

Lebanon's president Joseph Aoun condemned Saturday's attacks, calling them violations and "a clear message to the negotiation track and to the American efforts aimed at implementing this agreement," the Lebanese president's office said in a statement.

Israel has vowed to remain in southern Lebanon until Hezbollah is disarmed.

Iran's deputy foreign minister for legal and international affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi, posted a response on social media to President Donald Trump's statement that the Strait of Hormuz would be declared a U.S. territory after Iran is defeated.

"The Strait of Hormuz cannot be seized by tweet, nor by aircraft carrier, nor by issuing an order, nor by an election speech. Iran neither fears threats nor cowers before displays of power," he said.

He added that, "the Strait of Hormuz has been Iranian, is Iranian, and will remain Iranian; this strait will only be closed and opened under Iran's command, and as long as you do not accept the reality of defeat and cease your fanciful delusions, Iran will continue to enforce the blockade."

President Donald Trump said Friday he'd soon be "declaring the Hormuz Strait a territory of the United States" in remarks touting U.S. strength amid the Iran war.

Speaking at an event in Nassau, New York, on Friday mostly focused on crime and the economy, Trump said: "And after we finish defeating Iran, which is being very badly defeated... Pretty soon I'll be declaring the Hormuz Strait a territory of the United States."

Trump several times highlighted the naval blockade the U.S. is enforcing in the Strait of Hormuz, which was reinstated in July and marked the collapse of a memorandum of understanding between the two countries pausing hostilities following mutual accusations of violations.

"No ships get through unless we want them to," Trump said, adding: "Our military is unbelievable. The blockade is unstoppable. It's a wall of steel. The blockade is a wall of steel."

Regarding the economic impact of the war, Trump pitched the audience on paying a bit more for gas so that Iran would not be a threat.

"So remember that when you have to pay a little bit more," Trump said. You're at $4. It's OK."
