Iran live updates: US forces destroyed 5 Iranian oil tankers, CENTCOM says

Iran state media claimed the U.S. attacked an oil tanker near Kharg Island on Tuesday.

According to a report from Tasnim News Agency, a small Iranian oil tanker, located 4 nautical miles from Kharg Island, was the target of a missile attack by the U.S. military.

The tanker was struck by a projectile fired by U.S. forces in the vicinity of Kharg Island's anchorage, Tasnim said.

Tasnim said there are no reported casualties.

Iran claimed it seized an American underwater drone that the U.S. said had malfunctioned.

An underwater drone operated by the U.S. malfunctioned “more than a day ago” when it was surveying waters in the Middle East, a U.S. official told ABC News.

The same U.S. official said that the drone was "an older model that neither collected sensitive data nor carried any classified sonar or radar equipment."

The Trump administration is sanctioning 36 entities that it says support Iran's aviation sector, which the administration says helps the Iranian regime "move weapons, personnel, and illicit cargo" as well as companies that they acted as intermediaries for Iran.

This is the most recent in a string of actions targeting the Iranian economy as the Trump administration shifts their war strategy to financial strangulation.

"Let this be a warning to anyone doing business with Iran’s remaining airlines, all of which we sanctioned today: You are at risk of being cut off from the global financial system," Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a statement.

The Treasury Department sanctioned companies that facilitated the business of the already sanctioned Mahan Air as well as "three Iran-related aviation authorizations " that it said allowed for overflights and "on-U.S. airlines to fly U.S.-origin or U.S.-controlled commercial aircraft into Iran."

"Any foreign firm or individual enabling sanctioned Iranian airlines—including through aircraft transfers, cargo services, or general sales agent support—will face serious consequences for supporting the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism," the Treasury Department said in a statement.

Attacks on Saudi Arabia by Yemen's Houthi rebels wounded at least 73 people and halted operations at some energy facilities on Tuesday, the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen and the Saudi Energy Ministry said.

Fires erupted ‌at a number of energy sites and several people were injured as emergency teams rushed to contain the blazes and assess the damage, the Saudi Energy Ministry said in a statement.

The Iran-backed Houthis attacked the southern cities of Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jazan and Najran, the coalition said in a statement. It described the latest attacks as a "dangerous escalation," vowing to respond.

"The coalition will take all necessary operational measures to deter this terrorist militia and resolutely confront its hostile approach," coalition spokesperson Col. Turki al-Malki said in a statement published on X.

The Saudi Foreign Ministry affirmed the kingdom's right to "take all necessary measures to defend its sovereignty, safeguard its national resources and preserve the security and safety of its citizens and residents on its territory. It will not tolerate any attack targeting its territory or national resources, in accordance with the rules of international law."
