Iran live updates: Trump calls off new strikes, citing 'perimeters of a deal'

President Donald Trump announced Saturday night that he is holding off on new strikes against Iran, after officials had earlier warned that the president was considering an intense attack on energy targets which could have begun this weekend.

In a social media post, the president said Iran and other Middle Eastern countries asked "to hold off any attack in that the perimeters of a deal has been agreed to."

Trump added in the post, "Based on this request, I have agreed, for the future benefit of the WORLD and, likewise, the survival of a successful and prosperous Iran, to cancel the attack, subject to being able to rapidly make a DEAL."

The president said Israel is taking part in this "commitment" to hold off on strikes while a deal is ironed out.

It is unclear what, if anything, has been agreed to, but Trump said in the post that it included the "Immediate, Complete, and Total OPENING OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT, and an end to Iran’s nuclear threat."

It's not the first time Trump has threatened or considered escalatory attacks on Iran, only to reverse course and hold off for more talks.

He has also repeatedly complained about Iran’s trustworthiness -- saying leaders there agree to a deal and then break it moments later.

Iran's president said the future of Iran will be shaped by its people despite the "wars, pressure, and relentless hostilities" inflicted upon them.

"In all these hard days, it was the true heroes of the people who stood out. The future of Iran will be shaped by the people of Iran," President Masoud Pezeshkian posted on X Saturday.

Pezeshkian's post also referenced the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh who was in Tehran to attend the president's swearing-in ceremony in 2024.

"Two years ago, the start of our work coincided with the assassination of our dear guest," Pezeshkian said.

Air defenses intercepted Iranian drones inside Kuwait's airspace Saturday, a spokesman for the country's ministry of defense said in statement.

No injuries were reported but falling shrapnel from the interceptions resulted in material damage, the statement from Major General Saud Abdulaziz Al-Otaibi said.

"The heinous Iranian aggression targeted a number of vital facilities, including a government facility in the north of the country, as well as civilian vehicles belonging to one of the civil companies on Bubiyan Island," the statement said.

Officials did not disclose the number of drones involved in Saturday's incident.

The British Maritime Safety Agency, UKMTO, is reporting two incidents have taken place in the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday.

One incident took place 21 nautical miles northeast of Khasab, Oman, when the Master of a tanker reported seeing a large splash and explosion in close proximity to the vessel. No damage to the vessel has been reported at this time.

The other more serious incident happened 11 nautical miles northeast off Lima, Oman, when a tanker was struck by an unknown projectile and damaged the engine room. There are currently no reported causalities or environmental impact.

“The tanker is not under command and the regional Coast Guard have been informed,” UKMTO said. “Vessels are advised to transit with caution and report any suspicious activity to UKMTO.”
