Iran live updates: Trump calls off new strikes, Saudi ruler urges de-escalation

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said negotiations with Oman concerning the Strait of Hormuz are in their “final stages” and are “on the way to being finalized,” according to Iranian state media.

In a social media post, state news agency IRNA reported that Araghchi made the remarks at the start of a government meeting Sunday, where he presented an update on the talks between Iran and Oman.

"Referring to the progress of the talks, he announced that the negotiations are on the way to being finalized and are in their final stages," the post said.

Iran's state-run IRNA news agency reported late on Saturday that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held phone calls with senior officials in Pakistan, Turkey and Saudi Arabia to warn against renewed U.S. military action and threatening consequences if strikes resumed.

The calls reportedly took place in the hours before President Donald Trump said he had cancelled plans for U.S. forces to resume attacks in Iran.

"Warning against any adventurous actions by the U.S. military, the Iranian foreign minister emphasized the country's full readiness to safeguard its national sovereignty, territorial integrity and national security," the IRNA readout said.

Araghchi, the report added, said that "any aggression or hostile act by the U.S. and the Israeli regime, or any participation and alignment by regional countries, would be met with a decisive and proportionate response from Iran's armed forces, with those responsible bearing full accountability for all consequences arising from such adventures."

Saudi Arabia's state-run news agency, SPA, reported on Sunday that the country's de facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, spoke with President Donald Trump by phone to urge "de-escalation and diplomacy."

Salman, SPA reported, held a call with Trump "to discuss developments in the region and their regional and international implications."

The crown prince -- who is colloquially known as MBS -- "stressed the need to prioritize dialogue to reduce escalation and the importance of making every possible effort to achieve calm that paves the way for diplomatic solutions, preserves the region's security and stability and prevents a wider conflict whose repercussions would affect regional and international security and stability," SPA said.

President Donald Trump announced Saturday night that he is holding off on new strikes against Iran, after officials had earlier warned that the president was considering an intense attack on energy targets which could have begun this weekend.

In a social media post, the president said Iran and other Middle Eastern countries asked "to hold off any attack in that the perimeters of a deal has been agreed to."

Trump added in the post, "Based on this request, I have agreed, for the future benefit of the WORLD and, likewise, the survival of a successful and prosperous Iran, to cancel the attack, subject to being able to rapidly make a DEAL."

The president said Israel is taking part in this "commitment" to hold off on strikes while a deal is ironed out.

It is unclear what, if anything, has been agreed to, but Trump said in the post that it included the "Immediate, Complete, and Total OPENING OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT, and an end to Iran’s nuclear threat."

It's not the first time Trump has threatened or considered escalatory attacks on Iran, only to reverse course and hold off for more talks.

He has also repeatedly complained about Iran’s trustworthiness -- saying leaders there agree to a deal and then break it moments later.
