President Donald Trump announced "major combat operations" against Iran on Feb. 28, with massive joint U.S.-Israeli strikes attack targeting military and government sites, officials said.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was among those killed in Tehran on the first day of strikes, with his son Mojtaba Khamenei later chosen to succeed him. Iran has responded with missile and drone attacks targeting Israel, regional U.S. bases and multiple Gulf nations. Iran is also attempting to block some shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
Israel is also intensifying its long-running strike campaign against the Iran-backed Hezbollah militia in Lebanon and expanding its ground operations in the south of the country.

One person is dead and two others were injured in northern Israel after Hezbollah fired more missiles, according to Israel's emergency medical service.
At least 21 people have been killed in Israel since the start of the war.
Hezbollah said it would fight any Israeli move to occupy southern Lebanon, saying "it has always sought to occupy the south of Litani area and annex it," Hezbollah's lawyer, Hassan Fadlallah, said in a statement Tuesday.
"Now, we are facing Israeli aggression. We are in a defensive situation. The resistance fighters are battling in that area to prevent Israel from achieving this objective. This poses an existential threat to Lebanon as a state and to its geographically defined borders recognized internationally. Therefore, we have no choice but to confront this aggression and cling to the land," Fadlallah said.
Pakistan is ready to "facilitate meaningful and conclusive talks" to end the conflict in the Middle East, "subject to" an agreement from the U.S. and Iran to hold discussions, Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said in a post on X Tuesday.
"Subject to concurrence by the US and Iran, Pakistan stands ready and honoured to be the host to facilitate meaningful and conclusive talks for a comprehensive settlement of the ongoing conflict," Sharif said.
President Donald Trump later reposted the prime minister's post on his Truth Social account.
A contractor working for the United Arab Emirates was killed and five members of the military were injured in a missile attack in Bahrain, the UAE Ministry of Defense announced in a post on X Tuesday.
The incident happened during a routine mission in Bahrain, UAE's military said. The contractor was a Moroccan national working as a civilian contractor with the UAE's Ministry of Defense, according to the military.
Bahrain's Defense Force said the contractor was killed "performing his national duty alongside his brothers in the Bahrain Defense Force in confronting the sinful Iranian attacks."
