President Donald Trump announced "major combat operations" against Iran on Feb. 28, with massive joint U.S.-Israeli strikes attack targeting military and government sites, officials said.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was among those killed in Tehran on the first day of strikes, with his son Mojtaba Khamenei later chosen to succeed him. Iran has responded with missile and drone attacks targeting Israel, regional U.S. bases and multiple Gulf nations. Iran is also attempting to block some shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
Israel is also intensifying its long-running strike campaign against the Iran-backed Hezbollah militia in Lebanon and expanding its ground operations in the south of the country.

Iran has reported that a projectile hit the premises of the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency.
"According to Iran, there was no damage to the NPP itself nor injuries to staff, and the condition of the plant is normal," the IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said in a post on X.
President Donald Trump said that the Iranian officials who have been negotiating have given the U.S. a "big present" related to the Strait of Hormuz that is worth "a tremendous amount of money," he said at the swearing in of his new Secretary for the Department of Homeland Security.
The president did not disclose exactly what this "gift" was during his remarks in the Oval Office.
When pressed about the current negotiations, Trump insisted that he does not trust “anybody,” he said this “present” was a gesture that communicated to him “that we're dealing with the right people” regarding negotiations with Iran.
"They're going to make a deal. They did something yesterday that was amazing. Actually, they gave us a present, and the present arrived today. It was a very big present, worth a tremendous amount of money, and I'm not going to tell you what that present is, but it was a very significant prize," Trump said.

At least 290 troops have been wounded so far in the war with Iran, according to a U.S. official.
Ten of those injured are seriously wounded, which the Department of Defense defines as when the service member’s life is still at risk.

France's army chief criticized the U.S., saying the U.S. acts without informing France despite the relationship remaining "very strong" between the allies.
After the U.S. launched its war against Iran, “We acted immediately, surprised by an American ally who remains an ally but who is becoming increasingly unpredictable and doesn't even bother to inform us when they decide to launch military operations. It has an impact on our security, it has an impact on our interests," French Armed Forces Chief Fabien Mandon said Tuesday at a security and defense forum in Paris.
