President Donald Trump announced "major combat operations" against Iran on Feb. 28, with massive joint U.S.-Israeli strikes attack targeting military and government sites, officials said.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was among those killed in Tehran on the first day of strikes, with his son Mojtaba Khamenei later chosen to succeed him. Iran has responded with missile and drone attacks targeting Israel, regional U.S. bases and multiple Gulf nations. Iran is also attempting to block some shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.

Israel is also intensifying its long-running strike campaign against the Iran-backed Hezbollah militia in Lebanon and expanding its ground operations in the south of the country.

Yemen’s Houthis claim responsibility for their 1st attack on Israel since start of Iran War

Yemen’s Iranian-backed Houthi rebels on Saturday morning claimed responsibility for a ballistic missile attack on Israel, their first since the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran started.

The Israel Defense Forces confirmed the missile launch from Yemen toward Israeli territory in a statement Saturday morning and, when asked, a spokesperson told ABC News the attack was intercepted.

The attack targeted “sensitive Israeli military sites” in southern Israel, according to a statement from Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree, a military spokesman for the Houthi movement, a Shia insurgency fighting against Yemen’s Sunni-dominated government that currently maintains control over the country’s most populated areas, including the capital Sanaa.

This came just hours after Saree vaguely suggested in another statement Friday that the Houthis would join the war.

3rd aircraft carrier headed to Middle East for Iran operations

The USS George H.W. Bush carrier strike group left Norfolk, Virginia, earlier this week for its regularly scheduled deployment and will be headed to the Middle East, according to two U.S. officials. The deployment to the Middle East means there could be three aircraft carriers dedicated to combat operations against Iran.

It is unclear how long it will take the Bush carrier strike group to make its way to the Middle East.

The Gerald R. Ford and Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Groups are currently deployed to operations in the Middle East, though the Ford is currently in Crete receiving repairs following the recent fire aboard the carrier. The Lincoln has been operating in the north Arabian Sea carrying out regular combat flight missions over Iran.

The Ford left Norfolk last June and its deployment has been extended until May meaning it will be on an 11-month deployment.

It is unclear if the Ford will return to the CENTCOM area of operations after repairs are completed or if it will remain in the Eastern Mediterranean.

In addition to the Bush, three destroyers make up the carrier strike group: the USS Ross, USS Donald Cook and the USS Mason.

CBS News was the first to report the Bush’s deployment to the Middle East.
