Iran live updates: US and Iran agree to stop strikes, US official says

Iran’s state-run Press TV reports that a direct communication line has been established between Iran and the United States in the Strait of Hormuz on Friday. The direct channel is apparently intended to help prevent incidents that could escalate into military confrontation, according to the Iranian state TV.

Iranian state media is also reporting that three foreign oil tankers were turned back in the Strait of Hormuz after encountering warnings from the Iranian Navy on Friday.

The tankers were reportedly attempting to "illegally" transit the Strait of Hormuz and use the Southern Corridor. The tankers then changed course to the Persian Gulf, according to Iranian state TV.

The U.S. has not immediately commented about these claims.

After an Iranian drone struck a vessel in the Strait of Hormuz earlier Thursday, President Donald Trump is continuing to insist that the critical waterway is open.

"They want to make a deal with us very badly, and we probably will," Trump said, referring to Iran during remarks in the Rose Garden on Thursday evening. "I think we will, but the strait is open."

"We knocked the hell out of them, and now we're negotiating from a position of pure strength, pure strength. They know that, and the strait's already open, and we're setting records," Trump said.

"Yesterday, they took out 19 million barrels of oil. That's the most in the history of the strait, and the oil prices are dropping like a rock," he claimed.

Earlier, ABC News had reached out to the White House for comment on the Iran strike and for clarification on whether the strait remains open in light of such an attack.

"We are aware of these reports and looking into them. President Trump has been clear that Iran cannot subvert the free flow of traffic in the Strait," a U.S. official said.

The Iranian-run Persian Gulf Strait Authority warned against any vessel passing through routes outside its framework after reports of an Iranian drone striking a vessel in the Strait of Hormuz.

"Any passage through routes outside the framework designated by PGSA will not be covered by safe passage guarantees and will not be entitled to insurance coverage or related liabilities," PGSA said in a statement Thursday.

"The consequences arising from passage through unauthorized routes shall be the responsibility of the owner, operator, and vessel commander," PGSA said.

A U.S. official confirmed to ABC News that Iran attacked a ship in the Strait of Hormuz with a drone.
