French model and actress Brigitte Bardot became a sex symbol of the 1950s-60s, first appearing at 15 on the cover of Elle magazine. The original “sex kitten,” she portrayed sexually emancipated women, drawing a large male fan base. She appeared with Kirk Douglas in “Act of Love” and starred in “Helen of Troy,” but her breakthrough role was in “And God Created Woman.” Hounded by paparazzi and fans amid a tumultuous personal life, she withdrew from the spotlight at the height of stardom. After retiring, she became an advocate for animal rights and started the Brigitte Bardot Foundation.
