Ukraine and Russia trade hundreds of drones overnight, as Moscow continues targeting energy infrastructure

Russia's strikes hit a power substation in the Kyiv region, Ukraine said.

LONDON -- Ukraine and Russia exchanged hundreds of drone attacks on Tuesday night, with Russian strikes hitting power substations in northern Ukraine and a cargo ship carrying supplies for the Ukrainian military in the Black Sea, according to Russia’s Ministry of Defense. Ukrainian strikes hit a large logistics center and a data center in Russia.

Russia's strikes hit the Nalivaikovka power substation in the Kyiv region and the Chizhovka power substation in the Zhytomyr region, a Russian statement said. The "complex, massive" attacks are part of Moscow’s continued targeting of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.

Zelenskyy said Russia's overnight attacks damaged power generation facilities and substations in nine regions: Odesa, Cherkasy, Zhytomyr, Vinnytsia, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Chernivtsi, Chernihiv and Rivne.Ā

"In many cities and communities, emergency and unscheduled power outages are ongoing," wrote Zelenskyy in a social media post.

The strikes come after Russia's deadly attack on an aid distribution site on Monday in a village in southern Ukraine, which killed 31 people.

As of Wednesday morning, Ukraine’s Air Force said it had shot down 272 Russian drones using aviation, anti-aircraft missile forces, electronic warfare units, unmanned systems units and mobile fire groups. Combat operations were ongoing, with 20 drones still airborne.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said it intercepted 709 Ukrainian drones over 14 Russian regions, occupied Crimea and the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea.Ā

Meanwhile, Ukrainian drones strikes hit a large logistics complex in Adygeysk, southern Russia, operated by Ozon, one of Russia’s largest e-commerce retailers, according to Murat Kumpilov, the head of the Republic of Adygea. The facility is one of the company’s largest in southern Russia.

On the Russia-Ukraine border, eight people, including four children, were injured when Ukrainian strikes hit apartment buildings and cars, regional Gov. Alexander Shuvaev said.

In Russian-occupied Crimea, power supply restrictions have been imposed because of an accident outside the region, according to Oleg Kryuchkov, an adviser to the Russian-installed regional head. While in Russian-occupied Donetsk, a telecommunications company and a data center were hit by strikes, Russian media reports.Ā

Temporary restrictions have been imposed at airports in cities across Russia: Krasnodar, Kaluga, Saratov, Nizhny Novgorod, Izhevsk, Bugulma, Kazan, Nizhnekamsk, Volgograd, Samara, Ulyanovsk, and Ufa, as well as at Moscow’s Vnukovo and Domodedovo.

The attacks came as Ukraine and Russia prepare for a new round of U.S. mediated peace talks in Abu Dhabi in mid-November, with Kyiv seeking an end to Russian strikes on energy and other critical infrastructure as winter approaches.
