Justice Department says no ICE or FBI agents embedded with election monitors
A top Justice Department civil rights division official told a federal court that no FBI or Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents will serve as election monitors sent by the department to polling places on or around Election Day.
“There will be no Federal Bureau of Investigation or U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement employees, much less agents, serving as monitors,” Eric Neff, the acting chief of the Civil Rights Division’s voting rights section, said in a sworn document.
One Customs and Border Protection employee is detailed to the section, along with employees from the Bureau of Prisons, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Drug Enforcement Administration who will serve as monitors.
The Justice Department has typically sent election monitors to help ensure that federal voting rights laws are upheld. The practice has been followed by both Democratic and Republican administrations and is codified in law.
