St. Louis Beat Mets, Bring Series to 2-1
N E W Y O R K, Oct. 14 -- The St. Louis Cardinals rakedfive New York Mets pitchers for 14 hits in an 8-2 victory today that cut their deficit to two games to one in thebest-of-seven National League Championship Series.
The Cardinals, who lost the first two games at home, turnedthe tables by putting two runs on the board before the Metscame to bat, just as New York did to them in Games 1 and 2.
The Mets still have two games at Shea Stadium to try to close outthe series. Game 4 will be held Sunday at Shea. Games 6 and 7, if needed, would be in St. Louis.
Every Cardinal Starter Gets a Hit
New York right-handed starter Rick Reed lasted just 3 1/3innings, yielding eight hits and five runs, four of themearned, with one walk and four strikeouts. Rick White gave upthe other three runs as the Cards feasted on Mets right-handersafter being held in check by lefties in Games 1 and 2.
Andy Benes went eight solid innings for St. Louis, allowingsix singles with three walks and five strikeouts. Mike Jamesgot in trouble in the ninth but Dave Veres put out the fireby striking out the side.
Edgar Renteria went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI andJim Edmonds knocked in two runs as every Cardinal starterincluding Reed had a hit.
Only pinch hitters Mark McGwire, who flied out in thefourth with the bases loaded and two out, and Rick Wilkinsfailed to get a hit for the Cards.
Meanwhile, the Mets’ offense could not get going, scoringboth runs at the high cost of double plays.
Two teams have won National League Championship Seriesafter going down 2-0 but none has ever won after losing thefirst two at home.
