MACON, Ga. -- Jaylen King threw four touchdown passes and ran for two more scores in Mercer's 62-3 win over Presbyterian on Saturday night in a game called with two minutes to go because of lightning in the area.
The Bears (2-0), ranked 19th in the Stats Perform FCS poll, rolled up 600 yards of offense. King was 12-of-15 passing for 236 yards. Backup JP Pickles also had a passing and rushing touchdown.
Freshman Devon Caldwell rushed for 152 yards on 11 carries, most coming on an 83-yard TD — the longest scoring run in Mercer history — midway through the final quarter. Braden Smith had 132 yards receiving and a score.
King opened the scoring with a 16-yard rushing score, then threw TD passes of 51 yards to Smith, 32 to Eric Rasheed and 8 to Samuel Albee. He added a 12-yard rushing TD and a 14-yard scoring pass to Travion Solomon as the Bears raced to a 41-3 halftime advantage.
Landon Sharpe threw for 184 yards for the Blue Hose (1-1).
Presbyterian: Plays at Western Carolina on Sept. 19.
Mercer: Home against Furman next Saturday in a Southern Conference game.
