•Feb. 4, 2004: The Facebook founded at Harvard.
•June 2004: Moves to Palo Alto, Calif.
•May 2005: Accel Partners invests $12.7 million in Facebook.
•Aug. 2005: Name changed to just Facebook.
•July 2007: Harvard colleagues Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss sue; allege that Mark Zuckerberg stole the idea, code for Facebook from them.
•Oct. 2007: Microsoft buys 1.6% equity stake for $240 million
•Jan. 2008: Co-sponsors the New Hampshire presidential debate with ABC News.
•March 2008: Adds privacy controls to "Friend Lists."
•June 2008: Settles lawsuit brought by Harvard colleagues for undisclosed sum.
•Dec. 2008: Use of Facebook log-ons to sign into other websites generally available.
•Feb. 2009: Adds "Like" feature.

•Nov. 2011: Facebook settles Federal Trade Commission charges that it engaged in "unfair and deceptive" practices in the way it handled information its users deemed private.
•Jan. 2012: Facebook says Timeline will become default user interface and new apps will let members share their online activities in real time, such as the music they listen to, what they eat, where they are shopping.
•Feb. 1: Facebook files to become a publicly traded company.
