'NBA 2K8' rises above the competition

— -- The start of the NBA season is right around the corner, but hoops-hungry gamers can hit the hardwood early with three pro basketball titles to choose from. Which one is this year's MVP? Here's my breakdown:

'NBA 2K8'

Little has changed from last year's wonderful iteration, which is why the 2K Games franchise remains the season's top star.

Controls are almost identical to last season, with dribbling and shooting set to the left and right analog sticks. The robust setup is further enhanced with the newly-added Off-Ball Control. During play, you can bring up a menu giving you control other computer teammates. Send one player to set a screen, while you instruct another to post up in the paint.

It's the best control scheme of the bunch, but tough to learn if you're new to the franchise. Both the instruction booklet and game itself are sparse on tutorials, leaving 2K8 rookies at a big disadvantage.

Last year's "story" mode has been shelved in favor of NBA Blacktop, a streetball mode with mini-games from 21 to a slam dunk contest in Las Vegas. Learning signature slams is difficult, but quite entertaining over time, especially with the long list of dunks you have to choose from.

The presentation is lively, but the graphics still need polish. Players models have progressed, but some of those finite details like jersey textures and more natural facial expressions could use tweaking.

Computer opponents are more challenging, even on lower difficulties. If you're abusing defenders in the paint, your AI opponent throws more double teams. Players cut frequently to the basket, and move constantly, creating a fast-paced environment.

The gap between 2K8 and its competitors has closed, but the franchise's signature controls and diverse modes keep it at the top of the heap.

(8.5 stars out of 10; for the Xbox 360 and PS3; 2K Games)

'NBA Live 08'

If there were an award in this genre for most improved, it would go to Electronic Arts for creating a more palatable experience compared to last year's horrid '07 release.
