13-year-old boy behind wheel of stolen vehicle in deadly crash: Police
A 58-year-old man was killed in the collision, police said.
Police said a 13-year-old boy was behind the wheel of a stolen car filled with six other children that was involved in a deadly two-vehicle crash in Maryland.
The driver of the other vehicle was killed and all the children in the stolen vehicle were injured, according to police in Montgomery County.
The crash occurred early Tuesday in Germantown and resulted in extensive damage to both vehicles, police said.
The 13-year-old boy was driving a white 2015 Kia Optima that had been reported stolen from a Germantown residence several hours earlier, according to the Montgomery County Police Department.
Based on preliminary information, the Kia was traveling north on a highway when it entered an intersection and struck a blue 2007 Toyota Matrix traveling east, police said.
Police and fire rescue personnel responded to the scene around 5:25 a.m. Tuesday and found the Kia overturned with trapped occupants, authorities said.
The driver of the Toyota -- 58-year-old William Vance Payne II of Virginia -- was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The driver of the Kia was transported to an area hospital in critical but stable condition, police said. The other occupants -- four girls and two boys between the ages of 12 and 15 -- were transported to area hospitals with injuries ranging in severity, police said.
The investigation into the collision could take months to complete, police said Wednesday.
"Any charges related to the collision will be at the discretion of the Montgomery County State's Attorney's Office after the evidence is presented to them," the Montgomery County Police Department said in a press release.
