16 injured in Baltimore crash involving alleged stolen vehicle and bus: Police
Several people were in critical condition following the crash, authorities said.
Over a dozen people were injured after an alleged stolen vehicle collided with a public bus in Baltimore, authorities said.
The crash occurred at an intersection shortly before 1 p.m. Thursday, according to Baltimore police.
A vehicle containing four juveniles was allegedly fleeing officers when it collided with a Maryland Transit Administration bus, according to Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley.
"Preliminary information indicates that officers received an alert for a stolen vehicle and attempted to conduct a traffic stop," Worley said during a press briefing on Thursday near the scene of the crash.
The officers called for the Baltimore Police Department Aviation Unit to assist, he said.
"Shortly afterward, officers observed the vehicle collide with an MTA bus at this intersection," Worley said.
Twelve people on the bus, including the driver, were transported to area hospitals, according to Worley.
The four juveniles in the vehicle were also transported to the hospital, he said.
The majority of people had minor injuries, though several were in critical or serious condition, according to Baltimore Fire Department Chief James Wallace. At least two of the juveniles in the vehicle were in critical condition, according to Worley.
Based on the damage, the vehicle appeared to be driving at a high rate of speed when the crash occurred, according to Worley. The vehicle was traveling eastbound on East Oliver Street when it collided with a bus traveling southbound on North Wolfe Street, he said.
Worley did not know how long police had pursued the vehicle.
"I do know they followed it for a little bit before they got the hit that it was a stolen vehicle, and that's when they tried to stop it," he said.
The crash remains under investigation. Worley said investigators will look to review video from the bus and officers.
