A 30-year-old police officer died after Las Vegas law enforcement had a gun battle with an "erratic" person waving a gun, authorities said.
Just before 4 p.m. Tuesday, authorities received multiple reports of a person walking near an intersection who was "acting erratically while waving a gun in the air," Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Capt. Adam Seely told reporters.
Police and drones were dispatched to the scene, and a "gun battle ensued,"
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Sheriff Kevin McMahill said.
The suspect opened fire toward officers and at least one officer shot back at the suspect, Seely said.
The suspect was shot and died at the scene, McMahill said.
A police officer was also shot and taken to a hospital where he died, McMahill said.
The 30-year-old officer was a Marine veteran who had served with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department since 2023, McMahill said.
"I have lots of grieving police officers, a grieving community," McMahill said.
The officer's name has not yet been released.
