Dangerous heat strikes millions in the West, moves East
Extreme heat warnings are affecting millions of people.
Parts of the West are facing one more day of dangerous heat before relief arrives for the second half of the weekend.
Extreme heat warnings remain in effect until 8 p.m. local time Saturday for parts of southern California and Arizona, including Phoenix, Tucson and Palm Springs.
Residents are asked to avoid the outdoors for and extended period of time and to conserve energy.
Heat Advisories are also up for portions of the Southern California coast, including Santa Barbara, Los Angeles and San Diego.
The dangerous heat will spread to much of the Midwest and then move east through early next week.
Heat index values will be near 100 degrees Sunday afternoon from Wichita, Kansas, Kansas City, Missouri, and Des Moines, Iowa.
By Tuesday, it will feel like the upper 90s in Chicago, with heat index values topping 100 degrees in cities like Charlotte and Raleigh, North Carolina, Richmond, Virginia and Washington, D.C.
While some warmer and more humid days are on the way next week, most of the Northeast will miss out of this round of dangerous heat.
