Kentucky state trooper killed in shooting while patrolling highway: Police

An on-duty Kentucky state trooper was killed in a shooting incident on a highway Monday, authorities said.

A suspect was taken into custody following an hourslong manhunt, police said.

The trooper was patrolling Interstate 65 in Warren County, Kentucky, on Monday when the "severe attack" occurred near the 38-mile marker, state officials said. No additional details on the incident have been released.

Authorities issued an alert for the possible suspect vehicle in the shooting, a bluish-gray 2025 Honda Civic, while warning that the individual was considered "armed and dangerous."

State police canceled the alert Monday evening, updating that the suspect had been taken into custody by Louisville police.

Kentucky State Police identified the deceased trooper as Hayden Phillips.
