Tensions are escalating between President Donald Trump and California Gov. Gavin Newsom as protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement continue to grip Los Angeles and spread to New York City, San Francisco, Boston, Austin, Texas, and other cities.
Trump deployed about 4,000 National Guardsmen and 700 Marines to LA against Newsom's wishes.
A federal appeals court Thursday delayed an order requiring the Trump administration to return control of the National Guard to Newsom, dealing the administration a temporary reprieve to what would have been a major reversal of its policy on the protests.
City of Los Angeles goes on 'Tactical Alert' as protests continue
The Los Angeles Police Department announced on Monday that the city is going on "Tactical Alert."
"The City of Los Angeles has declared a Tactical Alert," the LAPD wrote on X. "All uniformed personnel are to remain on duty."

The term signifies a heightened level of response and preparedness where officers can be kept on past their shift end time and moved around between divisions.
This type of response is often deployed when major events occur in the city, which require significant resources.

Union leader David Huerta released on bond after protest arrest
California union leader David Huerta, who has been charged with conspiring to impede an officer during a demonstration over President Donald Trump's immigration crackdown, was released Monday from federal custody on $50,000 bond.

Huerta is the president of Service Employees International Union California, which represents thousands of janitors, security officers and other workers. The union said he was arrested on Friday while observing and documenting law enforcement activity at an ICE raid in Los Angeles.

His arrest has become a rallying cry for union members nationwide and Democratic politicians who had called for his release. The SEIU held a large rally in downtown Los Angeles earlier Monday in support of Huerta. Demonstrations were also planned in at least a dozen cities, from Boston to Denver.

Newsom calls Marines deployment on US soil 'un-American'
California Gov. Gavin Newsom reacted to the deployment of 700 Marines to Los Angeles, calling the move "un-American."
"U.S. Marines have served honorably across multiple wars in defense of democracy. They are heroes," he said in a post on X on Monday. "They shouldn't be deployed on American soil facing their own countrymen to fulfill the deranged fantasy of a dictatorial President."

What's happening in LA 'would not be tolerated' in NYC, Mayor Adams says
New York City Mayor Eric Adams addressed the growing demonstrations in Los Angeles and across the country protesting ICE raids on Monday, saying he will accept peaceful protests but "we will not allow violence and lawlessness."
"The escalation of protests in Los Angeles over the last couple of days is unacceptable and would not be tolerated if attempted in our city," Adams said at a press briefing.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said during the briefing that police will protect the right to protest peacefully but added, "We have no tolerance for violence. None."
Tisch said a plan is in place to use the full resources of the NYPD if needed.
