Tensions are escalating between President Donald Trump and California Gov. Gavin Newsom as protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement continue to grip Los Angeles and spread to New York City, San Francisco, Boston, Austin, Texas, and other cities.

Trump deployed about 4,000 National Guardsmen and 700 Marines to LA against Newsom's wishes.

A federal appeals court Thursday delayed an order requiring the Trump administration to return control of the National Guard to Newsom, dealing the administration a temporary reprieve to what would have been a major reversal of its policy on the protests.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom said Monday he has been informed that an additional 2,000 National Guard troops are being sent to Los Angeles, after President Donald Trump previously deployed 2,000 troops.

"The first 2,000? Given no food or water. Only approx. 300 are deployed -- the rest are sitting, unused, in federal buildings without orders," Newsom said in a post on X. "This isn’t about public safety. It’s about stroking a dangerous President’s ego."

"This is Reckless. Pointless. And Disrespectful to our troops," he added.

LAPD chief says arrival of federal forces presents 'significant' challenge

Following news of the Marines deployment, LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell said the "arrival of federal military forces in Los Angeles -- absent clear coordination -- presents a significant logistical and operational challenge for those of us charged with safeguarding this city."

"The Los Angeles Police Department, alongside our mutual aid partners, has decades of experience managing large-scale public demonstrations, and we remain confident in our ability to do so professionally and effectively. That said, our top priority is the safety of both the public and the officers on the ground," McDonnell said.

He urged "open and continuous lines of communication between all agencies to prevent confusion, avoid escalation, and ensure a coordinated, lawful, and orderly response during this critical time."

City of Los Angeles goes on 'Tactical Alert' as protests continue

The Los Angeles Police Department announced on Monday that the city is going on "Tactical Alert."

"The City of Los Angeles has declared a Tactical Alert," the LAPD wrote on X. "All uniformed personnel are to remain on duty."

The term signifies a heightened level of response and preparedness where officers can be kept on past their shift end time and moved around between divisions.

This type of response is often deployed when major events occur in the city, which require significant resources.
