Protests live updates: Marines make 1st temporary detention in LA

Marines are now on duty in Los Angeles for the first time.

Tensions are escalating between President Donald Trump and California Gov. Gavin Newsom as protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement continue to grip Los Angeles and spread to New York City, San Francisco, Boston, Austin, Texas, and other cities.

Trump deployed about 4,000 National Guardsmen and 700 Marines to LA against Newsom's wishes.

A federal appeals court Thursday delayed an order requiring the Trump administration to return control of the National Guard to Newsom, dealing the administration a temporary reprieve to what would have been a major reversal of its policy on the protests.

'Mass' arrests beginning amid curfew, LAPD says

The LAPD said its officers would begin "mass" arrests in an area of downtown Los Angeles where protests continued amid an overnight curfew.

"Multiple groups continue to congregate on 1st St between Spring and Alameda," the LAPD Central Division said on social media just after 9 p.m., about an hour after the curfew went into effect.

"Those groups are being addressed and mass arrests are being initiated," the division said. "Curfew is in effect."

Curfew for downtown LA now in effect

A curfew for downtown Los Angeles is now in effect. It began at 8 p.m. local time and will last until 6 a.m.

The curfew applies to an area about one square mile in downtown LA, which has been the site of clashes between police and protesters over the past several days.

Earlier, police said they had arrested just under 200 people, so far, on Tuesday.

Newsom: 'Democracy is under assault'

During a video address on Tuesday night, California Gov. Gavin Newsom continued to condemn President Donald Trump's decision to deploy the National Guard and Marines to Los Angeles, saying Trump "chose theatrics over public safety."

The governor said the effects of that action and the Trump administration's crackdown on immigration are being felt not just in California, but across the nation.

"Democracy is under assault before our eyes," Newsom said.

Addressing ICE raids, the governor said that the administration is pushing mass deportations and "indiscriminately targeting hardworking immigrant families regardless of their roots or risk."

23 businesses looted in LA, with estimated millions in damage

During the press conference on Tuesday, Los Angeles officials said 23 businesses were looted overnight, causing damage that is estimated to be in the millions.

The damage was one of the factors that went into the curfew being put in place, Mayor Karen Bass said.

"Clearly, after the violence that took place last night -- 23 businesses looted -- and just the extensive widespread nature of the vandalism, we reached a tipping point," she said.
