A 37-year-old man was shot and killed Saturday morning in Minneapolis -- the second shooting of a U.S. citizen this month by federal agents in the city.

The shooting of Alex Pretti, an ICU nurse, ratcheted up tensions, as protesters clashed in the streets with law enforcement in the aftermath of the shooting.

The incident followed the fatal shooting of Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother, on Jan. 7.

Trump calls Bovino 'a pretty out there kind of a guy'

President Donald Trump said in an interview with Fox News that the administration is “going to de-escalate a little bit” in Minneapolis.

However, he rejected the characterization that the change in plans was a "pullback," and spoke about Border Patrol Commander Greg Bovino.

"Bovino is very good, but he's a pretty out there kind of a guy. And in some cases, that’s good. Maybe it wasn't good here," he said, before claiming, without evidence, that the recent protests in Minnesota have been populated with "paid insurrectionists" and "paid agitators."

Thune calls for 'full and impartial' investigation into Pretti shooting

Senate Majority Leader John Thune called for a "full and impartial" investigation into the shooting of Alex Pretti, which he called a "tragedy," during a speech on the Senate floor Tuesday.

"I'm glad that the president is sending Tom Homan to Minnesota, and I hope that his arrival will restore order to the situation," Thune said.

As Democrats are threatening to derail all six government funding bills if a bill that funds DHS is not separated out from the larger package, Thune urged his colleagues to advance the full package, including the DHS bill.

Thune said he would "prefer" to keep all six appropriations bills moving as a package, but didn't rule out entirely stripping out the DHS bill.

Later, the senator appeared to break with Trump's suggestion that protestors should not bring guns to protests.

"One, it's a constitutional right. Two, it's legal under the laws of the state of Minnesota. Perhaps [Pretti] didn't have ID, but with that exception, he was in compliance with the laws. He has a constitutional right," he said.

Thune dodged questions about his confidence in DHS Secretary Kristi Noem.

They were detained last week as part of the federal government's ongoing immigration crackdown in Minnesota.

In the order issued on Monday, U.S. District Judge Fred Biery said that Adrian Conejo Arias and his son cannot be removed from the district in Texas "during the pendency" of the litigation.

Dem effort to impeach Noem gains 50 cosponsors following Pretti killing

Rep. Robin Kelly, D-Ill., said Tuesday she now has 162 cosponsors on her effort to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. That's 50 more since Alex Pretti was killed in a shooting involving federal agents, she said.

No Republicans have signed on so far.

"With me stands 162 House Democrats ready to impeach Secretary Noem, but we need the majority of Congress to open their eyes to her brutality and unconstitutional actions," Kelly said Tuesday.
