Blizzard live updates: Snow totals top 2 feet as wind gusts reach 80 mph

The governors of New York and New Jersey have issued states of emergency.

A massive winter storm is barreling across the Northeast, dumping more than 2 feet of snow and prompting the first blizzard warning for New York City in nearly a decade.

Blowing winds up to 80 mph and heavy snow are pummeling New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

New York City travel ban lifted but mayor cautions New Yorkers to stay inside

New York City’s travel ban is now lifted, but Mayor Zohran Mamdani is urging New Yorkers to "stay indoors as much as possible."

The city has seen 14 to 20 inches of snow so far, Mamdani said, with another inch or two expected.

"The city's travel ban is lifted, but conditions on the roads remain icy," he wrote on social media. "If you choose to drive, please exercise caution, travel slowly, and be mindful of others on the road."

In Westchester County, just north of New York City, the road ban has been extended to 6 p.m. Monday.

New Jersey travel ban extended to noon, Hoboken's ban extended to 4 pm

New Jersey’s travel ban, which began at 9 p.m. Sunday, will now remain in effect until noon on Monday, police announced.

New Jersey State Police said the "extension is necessary due to …. [the] heavy snowfall, blizzard-like conditions, and strong winds that continue to create dangerous travel conditions."

"Residents are urged to avoid all non-essential travel until the restriction is lifted," police said.

This is the first time all of New Jersey has been under a blizzard warning in 30 years.

In Hoboken, just outside New York City, officials said the city travel ban is extended to 4 p.m.

Staying off the roads allows crews to continue plowing safely and allows public safety to address emergencies quickly," city officials said.

New Jersey Transit said it's suspended all of its trains and busses until further notice.

Wind gusts over 80 mph

The blizzard’s powerful winds are downing trees, damaging cars, knocking out power and causing extremely dangerous travel conditions.

Wind gusts have hit 84 mph in the Hamptons in New York; 83 mph on Nantucket in Massachusetts; 73 mph on Cape Cod, Massachusetts; and 62 mph at New York City’s JFK airport.

'Please stay home,' New York governor says

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul is urging New Yorkers to "stay home and keep the roads clear for plows and first responders" as the heavy snow and powerful winds continue.

State emergency officials said snowfall rates of 1-to-3 inches per hour are expected, "making travel nearly impossible."

As residents hunker down, Hochul on social media asked people to "check on your neighbors, especially older adults, and report power outages."
