Blizzard live updates: Snow totals top 2 feet as wind gusts reach 80 mph

New York City remains under a state of emergency even though "the worst has passed," Mayor Zohran Mamdani said at a news conference Monday.

"I’m imploring New Yorkers to stay off the roads," he said.

Over 2 feet of snow has fallen in parts of Staten Island, Mamdani said. Central Park has recorded more than 19 inches.

"Conditions have begun to moderate, but there is still more to come," he said, noting that snow will linger through the afternoon and wind gusts could stay as high as 40 mph through the evening.

Mamdani said the city’s schools will return to in-person learning on Tuesday.

New York City’s travel ban is now lifted, but Mayor Zohran Mamdani is urging New Yorkers to "stay indoors as much as possible."

The city has seen 14 to 20 inches of snow so far, Mamdani said, with another inch or two expected.

"The city's travel ban is lifted, but conditions on the roads remain icy," he wrote on social media. "If you choose to drive, please exercise caution, travel slowly, and be mindful of others on the road."

In Westchester County, just north of New York City, the road ban has been extended to 6 p.m. Monday.

New Jersey’s travel ban, which began at 9 p.m. Sunday, will now remain in effect until noon on Monday, police announced.

New Jersey State Police said the "extension is necessary due to …. [the] heavy snowfall, blizzard-like conditions, and strong winds that continue to create dangerous travel conditions."

"Residents are urged to avoid all non-essential travel until the restriction is lifted," police said.

This is the first time all of New Jersey has been under a blizzard warning in 30 years.

In Hoboken, just outside New York City, officials said the city travel ban is extended to 4 p.m.

Staying off the roads allows crews to continue plowing safely and allows public safety to address emergencies quickly," city officials said.

New Jersey Transit said it's suspended all of its trains and busses until further notice.

The blizzard’s powerful winds are downing trees, damaging cars, knocking out power and causing extremely dangerous travel conditions.

Wind gusts have hit 84 mph in the Hamptons in New York; 83 mph on Nantucket in Massachusetts; 73 mph on Cape Cod, Massachusetts; and 62 mph at New York City’s JFK airport.
