Jeffries swipes at Trump's July 4 bill deadline: 'That ain't my deadline'

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries shows no signs of slowing down as he approaches the 8-hour mark in his speech blasting President Trump's megabill on Thursday.

"I've still got a little more time. Donald Trump’s deadline may be Independence Day. That ain’t my deadline," Jeffries said. "You know why, Mr. Speaker, we don’t work for Donald Trump, we work for the American people. That's why we're here right now on the floor of the House of Representatives, standing up for the American people."

Democrats have critiqued Trump's self-imposed July 4 deadline for Republicans to pass the legislation, slamming GOP members for taking critical votes and debate on the bill often overnight.

Jeffries passes 7-hour mark, appears to be aiming for record

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries just surpassed the seven-hour mark using his "magic minute" as he continues to slam the Republican megabill and tell stories about his life and his Democratic colleagues on Thursday

It appears he is aiming to break the record previously set by Kevin McCarthy in 2021 -- who spoke for 8 hours and 32 minutes -- in opposition to the Build Back Better legislation. Jeffries must speak until 1:26 p.m. ET without yielding the floor to break that record
